Free Pattern: Mega-Magnificent Plarn Market Bag

Free Pattern: Mega-Magnificent Plarn Market Bag

Two disclaimers. First: I am very very new to crochet and consequently not that good at it. Second: I am well aware that this pattern has possible math mistakes and confusing parts in it. It made sense to me when I made a second one, so here it is for you. If you have suggestions for clarity or writing style, please leave them! I won’t be offended. *Provided free for personal use only.* I.e. please don’t make these and sell them. You can make them and give them away all you want, though!

I designed this basically to hold two gallons of milk without fear of catastrophic bag failure. So far, so good.

Materials
US K Crochet Hook (6.5mm, this was simply the biggest hook I had.)
A very large ball of plarn (I’m sorry, I didn’t count the bags before I made my plarn! I’d guess it’s somewhere around maybe 50(?) bags required to make enough)
Some kind of stitch marker that you can close (I used a knitting stitch holder)

Completely Non-Standard Abbreviations
Sc – single crochet
Tc – triple crochet
1inc – Sc 2 stitches into next stitch, sc 1
2inc – Sc 2 stitches into next stitch, sc 1, sc 2 stitches into next stitch
3inc – Sc 2 stitches into next stitch, sc 1, sc 2 stitches into next stitch, sc 1, sc 2 stitches into next stitch

Chain 25

Round 1: Skip first chain, and single crochet twice into second chain. Single crochet 17. Single crochet twice into last (or possibly next-to-last) stitch, single crochet 1. Single crochet twice into next stitch. Single crochet 15. Single crochet twice into next-to-last stitch, single crochet 1. Place marker in this final stitch. At end of every subsequent row, move marker to new final stitch.

Round 2: Sc 2x into first stitch. Sc 1. Sc 2x into next stitch. Sc 16. Sc 2x into next stitch. Sc 1. Sc 2x into next stitch. Sc 1. Sc 2x into next stitch. Sc 17. Sc 2x into next to last stitch. Sc 1. (Henceforth, I will use my crazy abbreviation system listed above.)

Round 5: 2inc, sc 24, 3inc, sc 27, 1inc

Round 6: 2inc, sc 27, 3inc, sc 30, 1inc

Round 7: 2inc, sc 30, 3inc, sc 33, 1inc

Round 8: 2inc, sc 33, 3inc, sc 36, 1inc

Round 9: 2inc, sc 36, 3inc, sc 39, 1inc

Round 10: 2inc, sc 39, 3inc, sc 42, 1inc

Bag Upper:
Work even in sc for 10 rows.

Work even in tc for 3 rows.

Decrease Rows:
Row 1: {Work 4 tc, skip next stitch}* repeat across entire row
Row 2: Work even in tc.

Repeat rows 1 and 2, two more times (for a total of 3 decrease row couplets worked).

Work even in sc for 8 rows. On 8th row stop three stitches before marker. Turn work. Ch 1, Sc 6 back across. This is the start of your handle.

Bag Handles:
Continue to {Ch 1, sc 6 across, and turn} until handle measures around 23″. Pull out the top of the bag, and pinch the two sides together, so you can find the opposite end. Count two stitch in from end, and crochet the handle to the top of the bag.

On opposite side of bag, pinch again, count two stitches over, pick up and sc 6 stitches. Repeat instructions as for previous handle. (Alternately, when you hold the two sides together, just pick up the stitches directly opposite the handle you’ve already crocheted.)

Voila!
